Born and raised in Galloway Township, New Jersey, Barrett had a difficult upbringing as the only Puerto Rican student in her school and one of the few living with a single mother. Her father, Drew Barrett, was a rapper, actor, and motivational speaker, and he had a music studio at home where Nessa would often spend time writing songs.
Despite her challenging upbringing, Barrett’s talent for songwriting was evident from a young age. She started writing songs “since [she] could walk and talk,” and in 2019, she began posting videos on TikTok. These videos caught the attention of Warner Records, and a recording contract soon followed.
Barrett’s debut single, “Pain,” which was released in July 2020, showcased her prowess as a songwriter and musician. The single was a piano-based ballad that tugged at listeners’ heartstrings and set the stage for what was to come.
In October 2020, Barrett released her second single, “If U Love Me,” which showcased her versatility as an artist. In December 2020, she released a dark interpretation of “Santa Baby.” However, it was her collaboration with Jxdn and Travis Barker on the track “La Di Die” that helped catapult her into the mainstream. The song explored the downfalls of fame and was performed live on popular TV shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
